Introduction:
This past Christmas the Guma family took a trip to Guatemala to honor my grandmother, Consuelo Guma, who passed away on October 24, 2024. My grandparents were involved with a Guatemalan orphanage for many years.Christmas was Consuelo’s favorite holiday and her love for giving inspired us to carry on her legacy by visiting an orphanage and sharing the joy of the season. What started as a simple idea to bring holiday joy to children in need became an unforgettable experience.
Los Regalos:
In Antigua, Guatemala, we carefully selected gifts for 25 children ranging in age from 2 to 18. Each present was chosen with care, wrapped individually, and personalized with the children’s names. With the gifts ready, we eagerly set off to the orphanage.
Arriving at the orphanage, we were greeted with smiles and curiosity. We gathered the children together and called out each of their names one by one. Watching their excitement as they ran up to receive their gifts was pure joy. As each child opened their present, we chanted, “¡Que lo abran!” (Let them open it!)—a moment filled with laughter, cheers, and the sounds of delighted children playing with their new treasures.
Discovering Their World:
The orphanage staff graciously gave us a tour, allowing us to see where the children live and play. From the cribs for the youngest ones to the bunk bed-style rooms for the older kids, every corner of the orphanage reflected the care and dedication of the staff. We visited the kitchen, where meals are lovingly prepared, and the playground, where the children’s laughter echoed. This glimpse into their daily lives was both humbling and inspiring.
Reflections:
This trip reminded us that the true spirit of the holidays lies in giving and connection. Seeing the joy in the children’s faces reaffirmed the mission my grandparents instilled in us: to give selflessly and to uplift those in need. We left Guatemala not only with cherished memories but also with a renewed commitment to continuing my grandparents’ legacy. As we reflect on this incredible experience, we encourage others to join in acts of giving.
